A city to fall in love with!

I've always wanted to visit Japan. Since I was a little kid, I was always amazed by Japaneses culture and technology.

May 2008, I had a chance to visit one of the most amazing cities I've been to.. Tokyo. Tokyo is a city of life, and warmth. Compared to big cities with population over 12 millions I've been to, people of Tokyo are the most welcoming and generous ones.

Work is sacred in Japan, almost all Japanese I've met are perfectionists. when they wrap a gift, they put their hearts in that as much as a rocket scientist would put his heart in building his rocket. So no matter how small your job is, in Japan you have to do your best to make it perfect, and.. (to my surprise too) they don't take tips!! its not a known system in Japan.. two times I had to run after ladies making our rooms to tip them, and they would refuse as if my tip is an insult.. in there you have to BEG them to take the tip hehe.. but some workers in the hotel know are familiar with foreigners would accept it.. so they actually do not serve you for the purpose of the tip, but they do that because its their job.
Japanese are kinda religious, and I had the chance to visit one big temple in Tokyo (and I bought a lovely kimono from the market around it) before Shintos go into the temple they'd wash their faces and hands, and then the would go to a certain place to smell the burned scent.. after going inside the temple, they would clap their hands twice, when my sister asked about it, a lady told her that they clap to have the attention of the sacred god. Of course being a Muslim, I only believe in one God that is Allah. I still respect their freedom of choice to worship millions of gods.

Unfortunately I couldn't see the sacred statue, because it was very very sacred to the point they cover it with a long curtain. The temple in general was beautifully structured, and the carvings on the walls and poles were amazing to. Outside the temple there series of mini bulletin boards, on them drawn the story of their god of this temple.. the drawings were nice.

Food in Japan was a bit new to me. Sushi wasn't bad, I liked a very nice food which is a small ball of rice covered with raw salmon piece. To my surprise, raw fish doesn't taste raw.. it tastes salty and kinda cooked, it was amazing!

On the right, there is a picture of Onigiri, a famous Japanese snack made of rice balls with different flavor in the middle, this one was my first Onigiri, and it had tuna fish in the middle.. was very tasty.

Japanese are very shy people, somehow they force you to respect their life style and culture. I made a friend over there, a Japanese lady who have been to Egypt before and was very happy to see Arabian people like ourselves hehe.
I couldn't see sakura blossoms :( they only blossom end of march beginning of April.. I'll keep that in mind next time I visit Japan.. I really really really wanted to see them :( But well, I saw the empire's garden, actually was living next to it.. so yeah yeah.. I can humbly say I was the empire's neighbor for a week or so LOL and the wooden gate of the palace is 400 years old with that age Tokyo (its old name was Edo) is considered a NEW city in Japan.
I would love to tell you the story our tour guide told us about the empire and the samurai.. maybe I'll leave that for another time.. this is already a very long post..

Anyway, I had a wonderful time, and fulfilled my dream in visiting Japan.. I hope all your dreams would come true.. along with my other dreams too hehe :)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bathooon.blogspot.com/2008/05/tokyo-city-to-fall-in-love-with.html' title='Tokyo.. They can be a real problem.

Since I like sewing, I have made this humble knitting needles case from several pieces.

I made a small flap on the top to cover the needles while the case is wrapped, this will neatly secure the needles inside the case.

Well, its kinda neat, I made the upper two level of pockets to fit two needles each, while the front ones are wider so they can hold my double pointed needles sets.

Ermm.. I guess I can do that too hehe)

In UAE, when we want to express that we think something is really old, we say: "it brought dust to the air".. for example, if someone started to sing a very old song, I'd move my hand around my fact and say: "cough cough.. there is dust coming out of your mouth"..

This Ramadan, I've sent couple of my close friends greeting card for Eid that is customized with my printed name and address. One of the friends I sent this card to is Sanaa, who is my friend since we were kids in elementary school. Sanaa had always been active and energic, will the kind of friend who would be sitting next to me in jail and say (we're busted, but we had fun)..

She called me, and we chatted for around one hour (!!!).. I had real fun talking to her and remembering old times, she didn't change a bit, and she said that I didn't change as well.. it was like a very dusty conversation if you know what I mean hehehe many many old stuff.. but it was Magical!.. Felt like I'm 16 again, and my life haven't moved a bit, it was the kind of dust that cleared my brain for a whole hour, and made me realize how wonderful my childhood and teenage times and memories are.

Life would hurt you. Life would make you cry sometimes.. but good things happened, and no matter what bad things life would bring, nobody can take these good memories from you.

So, have you called any of your old friends lately? try it, you might like it :-)

A World of Peace

The more I live.. the more I learn about life, the more I realize how fragile is the skin that wraps the inner of each one of us.

If there is one thing that I learned from life, it would be that people are not to be judged by their appearance. Inside each one of us, there is a (me).. that is very kind and sweet I think, just wanting a chance to explore this life positively, and spread the wonderful things inside to the whole world.

I went to Haj (Pilgrimage) when I was in high school, the most amazing thing I thought of was how everybody was wearing the same clothes, and making the same actions. Rich next to poor, white next to black, Arabian next to non-Arabian, old next to young.. no differences.. no separations.. everybody is equal, everybody wants to be forgiven and is asking for heaven and happiness. around 2 millions people were around me.. and we all felt the same.. isn't that amazing?

I think we all are seeking for the same things, no matter how different it looks. Just now I realize.. it's really what everybody is looking for.. to be distinguished among the herd, to be admired and looked up to.

Just 3 days ago, I have got the news of a death of a nice person who used to work with me 5 years ago. Since she and I had a common friend, we were kept posted with each others news. I talked to her over the phone on one eid. Didn't really know that that phone call would be the very last one between us.

I had many memories of her, all are good ones. She was a nice person, and very cooperative coworker. We shared many meals, and sharing a meal in arabian culture is considered strong binding. You really can't harm a person who you've shared a meal with.. nowadays.. even these concepts are lost..

She died, earth kept on revolving, sun kept on shining.. I kept on breathing. It's just one life gone.. among a herd of lives.. :(

Craig (A very close friend) told me once, that we don't really have to be famous to make a difference. We can make a difference in the lives of those who come in contact with us. We might have changed many lives that we really don't know about. Any stone dropped on a lake's calm surface will create unlimited number of waves.. we never know which rock, or shore will welcome these waves and hide them in peace.

I was touched by this person's life. While I worked with her, she was calling me in the early morning from her office (that was 10 meters away from mine) and would sing a song for me. A call that didn't last more than 2-3 minutes usually would make my day.

I hope Allah will have mercy on her.. I hope I will get a chance to tell her how much I learned from her when we meet in heaven.

Till then.. I decided to live among the herd.. and keep my waves going on to touch as many hearts around me..

Rest in Peace.. Each one of these celebrations is called: Eid which literary means "celebration" in Arabic.

First celebration is Eid Al-Fitr. It is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month in the arabic islamic calendar. It is a celebration of successful fasting during Ramadan which is the 9th month.

Because Eid depends on the moon, at the end of 29th day, people would try to see if the new moon is born, if 2 people saw it and went to the specialized department and swore to Allah that they bare witnessed the new crescent, then Eid is declared (like what happened this year, Ramadan was only 29 days). Otherwise, the month is completed to 30 days and the next day would be Eid for sure, cause Arabian months can only be either 29days or 30 days.

Eid day starts in early morning around 5:30 or 6:00AM when speakers on masjids (mosques) would recite: Allah Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah which means: Allah is the greatest, there is no God but Allah. It goes on till it's time for Eid prayer. People then would put on their Eid clothes (any new cloth, usually celebrating like) and then everybody in the city would gather in one big square that is called (Mosalla Al-Eid) which means, the praying place for Eid, as the name suggest, this place is only opened for two days all over the year, only during the two Eids. Eid Prayer is attended by rulers and members of royal family in each city, and they usually are on the first line right after the Imam (the person who is leading the prayer), and next to them or behind them the rest of the people in the city.

Everybody capable would go there, to pray, the prayer is held and afterward a speech would be given. and when it's done, people would turn to each other and greet each other. It is very common in that place that people would greet even those who they don't know. As you know, Dubai has many nationalities, so it's common that people of different nationalities, different tongues would still greet each other "Eid Mubarak" meaning "Blessing Eid".

Then people would start visiting their relatives. Actually you might find this awkward. But this visiting is done in a very funny way hehehe. everybody visit everybody, and everybody has to eat something in each house. Morning visiting is usually done by men, for example all my uncles and male cousins would pass by our house, and when they are done they would go to the next uncle or auntie, usually each one of these visits would last`between 20 to 40 minutes in each house.

Afternoon visits usually held by ladies, so me and my sister would gather and go pass by each house of our grand relatives. And yess we have to eat something in each house. by the end of the day, you'd feel pretty much full hehehe, but it's really fun, you get to see everybody, and if somebody missed you on the morning visits, you can see them on the evening visits.

Eid is considered to be one great celebration, so it's natural that telephone networks would be very busy that it won't let your messages or calls go for sometime. SMS is something very common in Eid too, and each Eid, people invent more messages to go around, some of them are really funny others are warm and full of greetings and love.

One of the very common traditions in UAE (and many other countries too) giving money to children. This is held during all 3 days of celebration, right after morning visits of the first day. When I was a kid, all the kids of the neighborhood would gather in the morning, and then we would go knocking from door to door where the people would give us money of the eid, which is called :"Eidiyah".

At my family house we still hold this tradition of keeping money for children, and we take turns in responding to doors (since it's too many hehehe). when its my turn, I always make children sing for me LOL.. there is a very old song, that I used to sing with my cousins and friends when I was asking for Eidiyah "Atoona Eidiyah" which means "Give us the Eidiyah".

Eidiyah is also given to children of the same family, many relatives would give children money when they visit somebody's house, or being visited by someone with children. Actually, eidiyah is the the very real big amount of money children can really get at once. I used to spend my Eidiyah on alot of stuff, like buying toys or chocolate, sometimes I'd mix them with my sister's eidiyah and we can by something expensive we both wanted. Nowadays.. I have to give Eidiyyah..

One last thing on the topic. Money of Eidiyah have to be BRAND NEW LOL.. so before Eid, most of the people would go to the bank and exchange their old coins and paper money for new ones. Children wouldn't be happy if given old money (they'd still take it though LOL but they'll give you the nasty look).

As I must have mentioned somewhere, Eid is held for three days, the first day is the main Eid which most of the activities are don on, but you can still visit, call relatives or friends for the subsequent 2 days which total Eid to 3 days. In UAE, we make special food for each day.
My auntie (sister of my father) would still send our house some traditional food every first day. It's common to exchange food on Eid too.

Little girls and Ladies would decorate their hands and feet with Henna, which is a specific design done by coloring. usually fades within 3-4 weeks, Henna is a sign of celebration, so women would put it in Eid or weddings. and it's custom in my family to make new dresses for each one of the days, but usually the most expensive and best one is saved for first day.

I hope I gave you a very good idea about Eid customs in my country, I tried to cover everything. The bottom line, Eid is a happy time for family, kids and friends. It's a lovely celebration, that people living in islamic country would enjoy I think :-)

Eid Mubarak, have a very blessed day,
Buthaina

Survey..

I got this joke from my friend Sawsan, I think it is very deep.. and sad!

---- Message start ----

A world-wide survey was conducted, The only question asked was:

"Would you please give your honest opinion about solutions to the food shortage in the rest of the world?"

The survey was a huge failure because...:

In Africa they didn't know what " food " means.

In Eastern Europe they didn't know what " honest " means.

In Western Europe they didn't know what "shortage " means.

In China they didn't know What " opinion " means.

In the Middle East they didn't know what " solution" means.

In South America they didn't know what " please " means.
In the USA they didn't know what " the rest of the world " means
---- Message End ----

My regards to the person wrote that. I truly wish that people all around the world would donate the food of one meal to starvation victims :(

Eastern europe, "honest", well I haven't really been in contact of many of them. my dentist is from eastern europe, she is kind and honest.. I think, well if she wasn't then I'm in Big Trouble LOL.

Western Europe, "shortage", VERY correct hehehe, they might have homeless though, but I've been to many countries in western europe and they lead high style of life.

China, "opinion", well I'm not sure I can comment on that based on my personal experience, but based on what I see on media, which I don't trust much. Maybe people of China are so busy with their life that "opinion" isn't really an important thing. What doesn't work for some people might work for others right? I recently met a chinese online. They made strong impression, very kind and polite people really.

Middle East (my people), "Solution".. well LOOOOL.. sadly it's true!

South America, "please", I haven't been to south america, but I came across some of them in the states.. and well they kinda didn't know the word "please". However I met many polite people online while I played pool online (you get to meet all kind of people on yahoo rooms).

USA, "the rest of the world", I totally agree on this one. I think Americans in general are so occupied by their daily life, generally they don't really posses the curiosity about the other countries. On a video clip I saw, many couldn't find Australia on the map, which I found very strange. But, who can blame them? USA is a BIG country after all, and it's own news is enough to fill the people's daily life.

I didn't put this joke to offend anybody, it is meant to be a sarcastic joke. If any of my comments offended you please write to me, I apologize in advance :-)

I love the world, and all the people of the world :-)

TV and I..

kinBefore last week, I can't remember when was the last time I intentionally watched TV!

Sometimes (like once in two weeks) I turn TV on while cleaning the house, or cooking, basically I don't really watch it, I just use it as a silence-breaker and seldom I follow any of the programs.

According to an audio book about TVs and American Life, Americans spend 29 hours a week watching Tv, that's around 4 hours and few minutes a day. I can safely say that I watch TV for 0-29 minutes a week, and I'm sure some other people don't watch TV at all..

Fatima, my friend, told me the other day that when she actually watches TV for couple of hours it affects her negatively. She said that she noticed that after watching TV she turn to be a short-tempered person, which I can hardly imagine for how quite peaceful she is.

Video games? Internet? Audio books?, are these guys responsible for the end of the golden age of TV? is it really over?

Last week, I thought I'd start communicating with my TV, oh by that I mean: Turning it on and actually watching hehe. I found tons and tons of meaningless channels. By meaningless I don't mean entertaining channels cause I believe TV is an entertaining tool.. but I mean a channel that doesn't even qualify to be entertaining full of what we may call Junk-TV.

The majority of the remaining channels were entertaining, and the rest where actually useful.

I asked myself.. some of us might really watch tv just to watch tv.. not to learn anything not to do anything. I don't think I can do that. When I watch a movie or a show or even a commercial, I think there is a message in there, and when I receive the message, whether I like it or it, I still feel the power of the media.

Politically I don't trust news on TV. I may watch them, but I don't really believe all I see. I think the news are directed to convey what the owners or governments want the people to believe, and I don't like the idea that my mind is controlled, do you? :-)

I don't think I'll sell my TV yet.. Although I don't think of it as a friend, but Its noise break the silence of a home occupied by one person.

I might write more about this topic.. or I may not, but I can't blame TV for this ;-)

Switzerland, the green country

I'm in Switzerland!

I liked it a lot. the people are very kind and helpful. Sceneries are just the best you can see.

There are too many waterfalls, lakes and rivers. Maybe coming from a country where more than 70% of its land is covered by desert, I do love water very much.

I took this picture from one of the mountains, and the foggy thing on the top isn't a ghost or anything, its the clouds.

One thing bothered me about Switzerland, that the people in spite of their kindness lack the sense of system and order somehow. You'd be standing in a line, and people may simply over pass you, or you may register for a trip for a certain time, and realize it took way too longer than it was planned to. When you wanna buy a tour ticket, there is no line, people simply crowd around the booth. I thought that doesn't really fit the image I had about swiss people.

Places I've been to are generally safe. I liked all the places so much. And yes.. what they say about swiss cheese and swiss chocolate is absolutely true! they are YUM YUM YUM.

Switzerland is an extremely expensive country. The most expensive country I've ever been to, and I've been to UK, you see my point? :-S

I didn't get a swiss watch.. cause I realized that swiss watches are sold cheaper in Dubai than they are in Switzerland hehe

Switzerland is really beautiful. We, Arabs, often use poetry to document our history, to express our feelings, to enjoy the sweet or sour taste of wisdom or truth. (will sometimes it is sour isn't it?)

I personally have tried to write poetry since I was like 11 or even younger, some people say that my poems are good, some would shake their heads politely and remain silent hehehe.

Arabic poetry has the extensive amount of pictures, music and emotions which are the main factor of any Arabic text, and that's why it's (Arabic Text) most of the time is consisted of many eloquence pictures. Actually that was one of the main strength points that made Muslims believe in Qur'an. Because the Holy Qur'an consists almost 10s of eloquent compositions in every page. Thats why many Arabian people became Muslims just by listening to Qur'an even without discussing any concepts or beliefs, because it rich textual shows that it comes from a higher level than human capabilities.

Honest emotion that is sensed in Arabic poetry usually what draws my attention to it. When I feel that there is actually a human being with feelings behind verses of poetry, it's sure make me believe the lines.. well even they weren't real after all.

Who Moved My Cheese

Who Moved My Cheese

 Author

Dr. Spencer Johnson

 ISBN

0-399-14446-3

Links

- Wikipedia
- Amazon

This book is one of the most amazing books I've ever read. It's short, light and would make a great difference in your life.

Earth is a dynamic planet; change is something that we face almost every minute in our lives. This book provides guidance on how to deal with change in your personal life or in your work. I recommend this book for those who don't like reading very much :-)

On the same topic, I got an email in Arabic once about a frog, unfortunately, I don't know the author (if you do, email me). This frog was dropped in a bot of boiling water, it started to jump till it escaped. When the frog was put on a room temperature water, and the scientists increased the temperature of water gradually, it stayed still till it died!

The frog sensed only sudden and strong change in temperature, but it didn't sense the gradual change. The author of the email then asked: "Are you a frog?".
